Caesar van Everdingen
Portrait of a man
Though this portrait is not signed nor dated, the artist without doubt is the Alkmaar painter Caesar van Everdingen who was recognized in his time as one of the best painters of the city. Based on the man’s dress this work is dateable to 1665-70 when this attire was fashionable. The artist’s great talent is evident from the way the light falls on the collar, the sleeves and the cufflinks, describing each fold of the fabric, making these almost tangible.
