This is the only extant still life by the Haarlem painter Judith Leyster and as such it stands out within her small oeuvre. A superb seventeenth-century artist, Leyster is one of the few female painters from her time whose fame has endured to the present day. She signed with a highly original monogram on the right wall: the letters J and L with a star shooting to the right, an allusion to her name, Leyster (lode star).
