Abraham Bloemaert
Boy with rumbling pot
This image of a boy is undoubtedly one of Abraham Bloemaert’s most charming genre pieces. The bizarre headgear and sausage slung over his shoulder identify him as a carnival reveller (in Dutch : a ‘Hansworst’). The rumbling pot is an earthenware jar covered with a pig’s bladder. When moving the reed up and down a very unpleasant ‘sawing’ sound was produced.
