Young Woman in a Black Hat on a Balustrade
Ilone and I love this painting by Caesar Boetius van Everdingen. It is a puzzle. The lack of attributes, background landscape and narrative context does not assist its interpretation. Ever since we first saw Van Everdingen’s fabulous painting in the Mauritshuis in 1995 we tried to acquire a Van Everdingen genre painting – not easy!
Van Everdingen is considered a member of the Dutch Classicist school and his works are very recognizable : they have their very own elements: mysterious, stillness and timelessness. Paul Huys Janssen dates the work to between 1650 and 1655.
