Dirck de Bray
Still Life of a Basket of Flowers on a Marble Ledge
Only 7 flower still lifes by Dirck de Bray are known to us, all dated.
Dirck came from a family of artists; his father Salomon was one of Haarlem’s leading history painters who had trained his sons Jan and Joseph. In 1665 the plague struck Haarlem and killed the whole family except for Jan and Dirck. There is nothing to prepare us for this dazzling work: the present meditative picture dated 1665 is Dirck de Bray’s earliest oil painting.
