Proud owners! One of George’s favorites! The scene here describes the moment Peter realizes he has forsaken his G’d and he is desperate! The artist must have been very pleased with the result himself as he signed his name in large letters at the bottom middle : ‘G. Honthorst ft’. Peter penitent was painted in Italy around 1618-20 before Van Honthorst’ s return to his native Utrecht. It is one of only 17 paintings that we know today from his Italian period.
