Jacob Adriaensz Backer

Portrait of a woman with a white cap

When Jacob Backer arrived in Amsterdam in 1632, he frequently attended the Uylenburgh workshop, which was then led by Rembrandt, two years his senior. In this very accomplished work, Backer portrays his model with an extremely refined technique, giving it a greater “presence”. The painting, once attributed to Rembrandt, was purchased in 2010 and we have loved it ever since
