The Virgin and Child

Jan van Bijlert made several paintings of the Madonna and Child after returning from Italy and our work is undoubtedly among the most successful. Notice the very different, classicist style of this work which can be dated to the 1630s – compared to the St Mark which is caravaggist in nature. The present work strongly reflects the influence of Simon Vouet who Van Bijlert very likely met in Paris where he spent some months on his way to Italy.
